The Perfect Curtain Style For Your Windows

| Sash & Case Windows Edinburgh

Dressing your windows with the perfect curtains can be the final touch to a satisfyingly styled room. After you have employed a lot of other techniques this is usually the last touch in a long and well-thought-out plan needed to complete the room. There are a number of things to consider when picking the perfect curtains and it can be a daunting task. But there are a number of things that, if you get right, will result in the perfect look for your living room, it is important to choose with the following in mind.

Colour and Fabric
Choosing the colour and fabric choice is an essential step, sunlight streaming through your windows will eventually fade the colour of your curtains and it is important to pick a style that will last. A lighter colour is more likely to fade faster and so should be avoided if the room is likely to have a lot of sunlight, but if you change your curtains often then fading is less of a concern and only a minor consideration.
In regards to the fabric, it is important to choose in accordance to how it hangs, a heavy fabric choice will not be as crisp on your windows and too-light curtains will not fall well on the window sill. Linen, silk, faux silk and velvet are the best choices for curtains as they hang the best and are the most durable of the choices.
If keeping out the cold is a concern then fabric choice can also be important here. Fabrics such as suede, velvet, tapestry and tweed are heavy and block out light to keep heat in. But, any fabric can be interlined with an insulating material if that is desired. Doing this can also prolong the life of your curtains.

Length
Measuring your space is an important step in the curtain choosing process, but so is deciding how far above the window you wish for your curtains to begin. If your rail is inches away from the start of your window frame it is important to take this into account, otherwise you might end up with shorter curtains than you expected, and it is typical to have a six inch gap between your rail and the start of the windows.
When accounting for width it is also important to add a few extra inches to your measurements. This is so that they close well, ensure fullness and block out light fully if this is the main function of your curtains.
