Why the paint is part of the window
A sash window lives outdoors in Edinburgh rain, sun and frost. The coating has to flex with the timber, keep water out, and still let the wood breathe. Sherwin-Williams industrial wood coatings are built for factory-finished joinery: waterborne acrylic systems tested to EN 927 for weathering and liquid-water permeability, with typical factory-finish warranties of 5 to 10 years depending on the system and timber. Our three-coat application is guaranteed for 10 years when you follow the care guide we provide.
Factory finished, not painted on site
On-site painting fights dust, damp, temperature swings and uneven film thickness. We spray primer, mid-coat and top-coat in controlled workshop conditions so the finish is even, the edges are sealed, and the window arrives ready to hang. That is why the paintwork carries a 10-year guarantee: the film is built in the factory, not hoped for on a ladder.
Regularly audited for quality control
Sherwin-Williams technical teams audit finishing lines and standard operating procedures: film build, preparation, drying and handling. We are regularly audited so the system we specify is the system that actually goes on the timber. If a coat is short, they catch it before the window leaves the workshop.
A microporous system for Scottish weather
The coating is water-based and microporous. Moisture vapour can leave the timber; liquid water stays out. The film stays flexible as the sash moves through the year, which reduces the cracking, blistering and flaking that kill site-painted joinery. Higher-opacity colours also shield the timber from UV, which is why we recommend a re-coat around year five even though the paintwork is guaranteed for ten.
Three coats, built as a system
Sherwin-Williams specifies joinery coatings as a system, not a single tin. Primer, mid-coat and top-coat each have a job. Skip one and the guarantee does not stand.

Seals the timber, isolates extractives, and gives the mid-coat something to hold.

Builds film thickness and evens the colour before the final spray.

The weather face: UV protection, water shed, and the colour you see from the street.
We measure, deliver and fit
The paint is only half the promise. The same team surveys the openings, manufactures the sashes, sprays the finish, delivers the windows and fits them. You are not coordinating a joiner, a painter and a fitter. The full job is done in one go.
