Nestled in the historic village of Duddingston at the foot of Arthur's Seat, this charming farmhouse property combines Georgian origins with later Victorian additions. The eclectic mix of window styles and sizes, from small cottage-style casements to tall Georgian sashes, presented an interesting design challenge that required careful attention to the character of each part of the building.
The existing windows were a patchwork of originals, earlier replacements, and emergency repairs spanning several decades. Many were single glazed, draughty, and in poor condition, yet each told part of the building's story. Our approach was to design replacement windows that respected the distinct character of each elevation while bringing the entire property up to a consistent standard of performance.
For the original Georgian section, we manufactured six-over-six sash windows with slim astragal bars and double glazing. The Victorian wing received two-over-two sashes with horns, reflecting the later architectural style. And for the cottage element, we produced bespoke casement windows that matched the rustic charm of this part of the building. All windows were manufactured in our workshop from sustainably sourced timber.
We also replaced the main entrance door, a beautiful solid timber door with decorative glazed panels, manufactured in our workshop to match the period of the Georgian section. The entire project was completed in five weeks, transforming the thermal performance and appearance of this much-loved family home while preserving its unique architectural character.
The owners had lived with draughty, rattling windows for years, and the difference was immediately apparent. The farmhouse is now warmer, quieter, and more energy-efficient, while retaining all the charm and character that makes Duddingston one of Edinburgh's most special villages.
